Oscar WildePARIS, FRANCE -- Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde passed away at 3:00 pm on November 30, 1900 at the age of 46 in his room at Hôtel d'Alsace. Mr. Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, in Dublin to Sir William Wilde and Lady Jane Wilde. He is survived by his two children, Cyril and Vivian. His wife, Constance Lloyd Wilde, preceded him in death.
Oscar Wilde attended Trinity College in Dublin, and later Magdalen College in Oxford. He received many awards for his writing and work in the classics, such as the Berkeley Gold Medal for Greek and numerous scholarships during his academic career. Mr. Wilde published several novels, including his most successful The Picture of Dorian Grey. He also wrote poetry and plays, several of which were performed in England, France, and the United States. |
Constance Wilde neé LloydGENOA, ITALY -- Constance Wilde, born Constance Mary Lloyd, passed away on April 7, 1898 at the age of 39. She was born in Dublin, Ireland to Horace Lloyd and Adelaide Atkinson Lloyd. Mrs. Wilde is survived by her husband, Oscar Wilde, whom she married on May 29, 1884. Their two children also survive, Cyril and Vivian Wilde. Doctors are unsure of the exact cause of Mrs. Wilde's death, as her own doctors have disagreed many times in the past. Mrs. Wilde had been sick for several years with some kind of degenerative disease. In 1888, Mrs. Wilde's book of children's stories told to her by her grandmother, called There Was Once, was published.
